Canada invests in Cleantech Solutions at Lafarge cement plants

RICHMOND — Natural Resources Minister Jonathan Wilkinson has announced an investment of over $1.9 million to help the development of technologies designed to reduce fossil fuel consumption at Lafarge Canada Inc.’s cement plants in Richmond, B.C. and Brookfield, N.S.

Lafarge Canada Inc. also provided funding toward the $18.5 million project according to Natural Resources Canada.

The investment has supported Lafarge in launching a lower carbon fuel system to reduce pollution associated with the production of cement.

The goal of the project was to make the two facilities as carbon-efficient as possible by lowering fossil fuel use with non-recyclable waste byproducts and minimizing landfill waste.

Natural Resources Canada provided funding through its Innovation Program which seeks to aid clean energy developments and helps to ensure the affordability of clean technologies. The program also intends to push economic growth through environmental sustainability and the creation of clean jobs.

“The Government of Canada continues to accelerate the development of innovative clean technologies that can decarbonize the most hard-to-abate sectors. Investing in cleantech projects — like the Lafarge cement plants in Richmond, B.C., and in Brookfield, Nova Scotia — will help us achieve net-zero emissions by 2050 while also creating sustainable jobs and spurring economic growth,” said Wilkinson in a statement.
