February 14, 2024 – Infrastructure Canada says the Dakota Oyate Elder Care Lodge in Manitoba will benefit from energy efficiency and accessibility renovations with over $2.9 million from the federal government’s Green and Inclusive Community Buildings (GICB) program.

Among other things, the funding will go toward the installation of solar panels and an energy-efficient heating system. Additionally, the HVAC system will be upgraded to support the new heating system.

Once complete, these improvements are expected to reduce the facility’s energy consumption by an estimated 104% and GHG emissions by 0.83 tonnes annually.

“The Dakota Oyate Lodge net-zero project promotes sustainable technologies while enhancing the quality of life for our Elders,” said Vincent Tacan, Chief of Sioux Valley Dakota Nation, adding that the community “is extremely pleased to be a recipient of this funding and in being a leader in green infrastructure.”

The federal government is spending $2,974,047 on this project through the GICB program.
